Winter Makes A Cameo Appearance Spring Like Pattern As March Begins Friday

Leap day gives us one extra day of meteorological winter and it is the perfect day I suppose for winter to make a cameo appearance. Yesterday’s cold front is now well offshore and we are experiencing a quick shot of cold air that took us from the 60s yesterday to the 20s to near 30 this morning. We are looking sunshine with some developing clouds today. Gusty winds from the northwest will slowly ease as the day wears on. Most high temperatures will be in the upper 30s and lower 40s.

As we mentioned this shot of cold air is short-lived as it pulls out quickly tonight. Skies should be mostly clear with lows tonight in the 20s with light winds. Friday we see the winds turning more to the south and that brings us warmer temperatures though the wind is off the cold ocean. Look for sunshine much of the day Friday with highs mostly in the 40s.

March first starts meteorological spring which is that 3 month period where the atmosphere warms the fastest. Since much of the Eastern US didn’t really have much of a winter, we are going to see temperatures trending warmer than normal for, it appears, the entire first half of March. Spring or spring-like patterns as we know are volatile and also don’t exactly mean that the sun is shining and the birds are singing.

The weekend starts off cloudy, dreary, and in some places, wet. Low pressure coming out of the Southeast US will move offshore Saturday afternoon. The system looks to be on the weak side so while we will see a period of rain later Friday night into Saturday afternoon, it may be more of an issue near the coast verses inland areas. Winds will be from the east and that will hold temperatures down somewhat. When it’s not raining it will be overcast with highs mostly in the 40s to around 50 or so.

Sunday should be a better day as the offshore system moves away to the east and we see some sunshine returning though there may be some clouds in the mix, especially near the coast. Sunday highs will likely be higher as we see 50s along the coast with onshore winds while inland areas could reach into the 60s.

If you are thinking that winter will likely make some sort of a brief appearance in the coming weeks, you may be waiting in futility. The upper air pattern continues to drive storms into the Western US while the Eastern US remains in a warmer than normal temperature pattern for the next 2 weeks which takes us basically into the middle of the month of March. Enjoy the first weekend of meteorological spring.
