Wet Warm Pattern Setting Up for March As Weather Systems March Across the US

A new month begins and so does meteorological spring. March, April, and May is when average temperatures move up the fastest with normals rising 1 degree every 3 or 4 days. The month is starting out warm and it does appear that the first half of March at least will be a mostly warm and mostly wet pattern as weather systems move across the US with little to no cold air to speak of in the Eastern US, other than the occasional shot that sneaks in for a day or so. That said we have a sunny calm start to the month with high clouds perhaps coming up from the south late today. A south wind will keep temperatures from rising quickly today especially for areas with south and east facing shorelines like Coastal New Jersey, Long Island and Southern New England. Most highs today should reach the 50s except for 40s to near 50 in those coastal areas.

The next weather system is moving across the Gulf States today and will turn up the coast late today and tonight. This low is not going to intensify very much and it will bring an area of rain northward. We see rain coming in during the early morning hours Saturday and it should start to pull out from west to east Saturday afternoon.

The low will be offshore east of New Jersey and south of Long Island during the day Saturday. Rain is not going to amount to much really as we expect anywhere from a quarter to a half inch in general. The day will have that gloom and doom feel to it however with lots of low clouds and on and off rain that will last into the afternoon before tapering off from west to east.

Winds off the ocean from the east and northeast will likely keep most area temperatures in the 40s Saturday. We do see the chance for some improvement for Sunday though there will still be a bit of an onshore flow that might keep clouds in for awhile. However I think we should break out into some sunshine by Sunday afternoon and highs Sunday will be in the upper 50s and lower 60s inland and 50s along south and east facing shorelines. Monday and Tuesday will be dry but then we have another low and cold front with rain coming for Wednesday, followed by a short break late week and more rain coming for next weekend.  No real cold air is on the horizon as the upper air pattern remains favorable to big rain and snow storms in the Western US and warm and wet in the Eastern US.
