Strong Gusty Winds Sharp Cold Front Brings Showers Thunderstorms

& Sharp Temperature Drops

A very strong and sharp cold front is pushing east out of a strong storm over the Great Lakes. Ahead of the front as well as behind it we will see the pressure gradient across the Northeast and Mid Atlantic states tighten up. As a result we have wind advisories in effect for much of the area from the Delmarva Peninsula and Pennsylvania northeast to Upstate NY and New England and that includes New Jersey, New York City, the Hudson Valley and Long Island. High Wind Warnings are up for Southeastern New England and Upstate NY along and north of I-90.

Satellite and radars show showery rains and even some thunderstorms in the mix as the front approaches. There are some breaks in between these areas of showers so if the sun were to make appearance, this will create some daytime heating and instability. We see the potential for some isolated severe thunderstorms developing this afternoon and evening ahead of the front and so does the Storm Prediction Center.

A marginal risk exists from Northwestern New England and Northern NY southward to the Hudson Valley, Northwest New Jersey, much of Pennsylvania southwest into the Appalachians. Temperatures today will be very warm across the Northeast and Northern Mid Atlantic, rising to the mid and upper 60s in some areas inland but low to mid 60s will be commonplace.

Showers and thunderstorms will reach the coast late this afternoon and evening. The front is moving a little faster than advertised and it should be offshore by 9 or 10pm tonight. What follows will be a rather sharp fall in temperatures. Below is a loop of the temperatures starting from 1pm today through 7am Thursday morning. Temperatures go from near 60 this evening to low 30s and 20s by 2 or 3am Thursday or roughly a 30 degree temperature drop in about 6 hours time.

Rain should shut off as the front moves through from west to east between 7 and 10pm. With winds gusting to 40 mph or more and shifting from southwest to northwest, we will likely see any standing moisture evaporate before the temperatures drop off to under 32 so I do not expect any icing issues overnight. Skeis should at least partially clear and by morning lows will be in the 20s except for warmer urban areas which will be closer to 30.

This is another example of a quick shot of cold air coming in fast and going out fast. Thursday we will see sunshine and highs will be back to the low and middle 40s. Friday look for sun and arriving clouds with highs in the mid 40s to some lower 50s. High pressure moves offshore and low pressure moves across the South and then turns northward up the coast.

We are likely to be clipped by some rain late Friday night into Saturday afternoon as this low slides out to the south and east. We could see weather conditions improve for Sunday with some returning sunshine. There isn’t any cold air around this weekend so look for temperatures to rise into the 50s to near 60 Saturday and in the 50s for Sunday.
