Severe Weather Risk Today & Tonight, Isolated Severe Thunderstorms

Gloom & Doom Arrive Thursday Into Friday

The last several days have been extremely active in the world of severe weather and tornadoes. There have been 108 tornadoes since May 1st in the United States. Yesterday we saw 25 tornadoes with many of them in Southern Michigan. Today the area of risk covers a large portion of the eastern half of the US. We have the Storm Prediction Center indicating a marginal risk for severe weather for the Northeast and Middle Atlantic states for today and tonight. This means there is thunderstorm risk and that we could see isolated severe thundertorms.

Heavt downpours and thunderstorms are moving through the Northeast this morning from New England to New Jersey with some embedded thunderstorms in the mix. This will pass to the east leaving Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England in very warm and humid conditions today. Temperatures will reach the low to mid 80s except for cooler 70s to near 80 east of NYC and into Southern New England. It will be even cooler in Southeastern New England.

We will be watching for scattered showers and thunderstorms late today into tonight. Low pressure will be moving across the Ohio Valley and then heading more to the south into Virginia Thursday. This is actually going to put much of the area in an onshore flow. Severe weather risk likely will be from southernmost New Jersey southward where the warm sector is likely to be.

Thursday will begin the decent into the land of gloom and doom which, it appears to take us through the weekend. A series of lows and upper troughs will be passing through Thursday through Sunday with the low center tracks mostly to our south and this leaves us in onshore northeast flow. Clouds and showers will be around Thursday with temperatures just in the 60s to some lower 70s south.

Friday will be a raw day with easterly winds coming in from off the ocean around a chilly high building in Eastern Canada. A wave of rain or showers is likely. Temperatures Friday will be hard pressed to get out of the 50s in many areas except for maybe areas in South Jersey where even here 60 degree highs could be a challenge.

As for the weekend  I would describe it as two days of cloudy to occasionally partly sunny conditions but there is the risk for showers Saturday and also on Sunday. However it should not rain all the time. Temperatures both days will  likely be limited with highs just in the 60s. We should see a bit of a warm up early next week along with a couple of dry days and rising temperatures before the next front and the next chance for rain arrive probably next Wednesday.
