Several Weather Systems Moving Through the Northeast & Mid Atlantic,

Severe Weather Risk Thursday?

The new week begins with a relaxation of the ocean flow from over the weekend. Sunday was about as miserable a day as you can get with temperatures in the low and middle 50s but we area going to see a bit of change today. Winds will at least briefly turn more to the west at least inland and that will allow clouds to break up into some sunshine. However this will be temporary because there is another weather system moving out of the Tennessee Valley and that will be passing through late today and tonight. Temperatures today will be warmer than yesterday because this time of year, they reflexively bounce higher. Most highs will be in the upper 60s to lower 70s with cooler temperatures along south and east facing shorelines.

WEATHER RADAR

While most of the showers on the radars today are localaized and scattered, later today there will be an area of showers that will move east. The bulk of this rain will pass to the south but we will need to throw in the chance for some showers late today and tonight as this system goes by. The bulk passes from Southern New Jersey southward.

Tuesday brings the one day this week where issues will be minimal. Low pressure is out to the east and the next cold front is in the Midwest so we should be a good spot with sunshine for Tuesday. Temperatures  will be on the warm side with highs in the 70s. South and east facing shorelines will be in the cooler 60s. Tuesday will be the best weather day of the week.

The next weather system is going to move through with the chance for showers or a thunderstorm Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Then we will probably break out into some sunshine during Wednesday afternoon. If Tuesday is the nicest day, Wednesday is the warmest day with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s inland and cooler temperatures along south and east facing shorelines.

Thursday brings another low moving east across the Ohio Valley and that low will have a warm front extending eastward from Ohio to New Jersey. Exactly where that front sets up will be important because we do have a strong short wave and cold front rotating into the Great Lakes. This could be the set up for some severe weather risk south of the warm front.

This is also going to create a wide range in temperatures from Southern New England and Long Island where highs will just be in the upper 50s and lower 60s. Central and South Jersey as well as Southern Pennsylvania and points southward will see highs in the 70s. This sets up for potential severe weather risk Thursday in the Storm Prediction Center long range day 4 forecast and I have always been of the opinion that if they have it in the long range, it is probably a good idea to pay attention. The risk is from the southern half of New Jersey southward.

Friday brings low pressure that develops off the Mid Atlantic coast as the Great Lakes/Ohio Valley low weakens. This probably leaves us in a cloudy rainy day for Friday and lingering clouds and the chance for some showers over the weekend and that includes Sunday which is of course Mother’s Day.
