High Wind Warning Coastal Flood Watches & Warnings
As Major Storm Heads Toward Long Island
High Wind Warnings as well as Coastal flood watches and some local warnings are in effect for Long Island. Flood Watches for now are just to the west from NYC north, west and south and now include all of New Jersey as well as the Hudson Valley to the Catskills. Rainfall amounts of 2 to as much as 3 inches are likely. Long Island will also be dealing with high winds with a developing storm in the Northeast Gulf of Mexico that will track up the East Coast Sunday. Winds are going to be a big issue Sunday night into Monday morning with the strongest winds likely developing between 10pm Sunday and 8am Monday.
This is a snapshot of wind gusts forecast for 4am Monday and much of Long Island as well as the surrounding coastal waters will be dealing with 50 mph wind gusts or higher. Winds should start to ease after 8am or so as the storm center moves northward along the New Jersey coast and then heads into Northeastern NY and Vermont.

Rain will start to develop Sunday afternoon and then become heavy at times overnight Sunday into the first part of Monday. The rain could last until about midday before ending. Winds will remain reasonable through most of Sunday though they will start picking up some later in the afternoon. Once the storm moves north, winds shift to the northwest and while still gusty will be lower than what comes ahead of the storm center.
Once this storm exits, it appears that the weather should be mostly on the quiet side. There is no “real” cold air to speak of so we will see temperatures close to normal for Tuesday and Wednesday and then rise a bit again Thursday into Friday of this coming week. As far as coastal flooding is concerned, beginning Sunday and lasting into Monday morning, look for minor to moderate coastal flooding at high tides especially for any high tides Sunday night.
